Cal Cycling LOVE IN!!!
Hey Everyone, it’s time to FEEL THE LOVE!!
OK, while we fully admit that it will be slightly less elaborate than a gigantic German techno-fueled dance party in the streets, all current and prospective members of Cal Cycling will do themselves a favor by joining us for our annual Love-in. First-and-foremost a social event, the Love-in is a fun, no-stress way to get to know your fellow Cal Cyclists and participate in some fun low-key rides. The team will supply the food, all you have to do is show up with your bike!
This year, the Love-in will be held Sunday, September 9th. We will meet up in Berkeley at 8:30 am, and Caravan to the Love-in location. Sign up HERE, and be on the lookout for further details!
Mentor Program
If you’re interested in joining the mentoring network for Cal Cycling, please fill out the corresponding forms. Cycling can be a little intimidating for newer riders, and it can be useful to have someone you can approach to ask questions or advice about cycling, or even just find out where the best place to grab a post-ride burrito in Berkeley is (psst….it’s Gordo’s!!!).
Beginning of the Semester Meeting
Cal Cycling will have it’s general team meeting this Wednesday, August 29th at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be located in the Team Room at Haas Pavilion. For new riders this will be a great orientation towards learning more about joining the team and important upcoming events that we are organizing. For existing riders, please come by to meet new members, answer questions about the team, and learn about upcoming events.
See you all there!
The Starting Line
In only a few short weeks faces old and new will start trickling back into Berkeley. In the span of a few days Berkeley will awake from it’s summer slumber as students start roaming the streets once again. In their midst, the cycling team will start gearing up again for another great season of events and racing. For new members, as well as those returning: Welcome and Welcome Back.
This year, the officers are planning an awesome lineup of fall events to introduce new riders to the road and mountain disciplines, as well as extended trips to some of the best mountain-biking destinations in California. Even if you’re new to cycling, have no worries: We’ll have skills clinics and training camps to get you comfortable both on and off the bike. Even if you don’t plan on racing with us, feel free to join us at these events, as the cycling team is a great way to meet new people at UC Berkeley.
We are also rolling out a mentoring program to connect new riders with existing team members. By making these connections, we hope to reduce the perceived barriers people may feel in asking for advice related to cycling and school, as well as make it easier for new riders to be introduced to the team. The program is voluntary and will be open to both incoming graduate and undergraduate team members. Further details and sign-up sheets will be presented at the introductory team meeting.
Enjoy the rest of your summer, and GO BEARS!
Summer Lovin’
Sup, y’all. Summertime is a great time to ride bikes! Whether you’re Oski the bear, a new Cal grad student who just moved into town, or even a visiting Professor from Stanfuerd (spelling?), if you like riding bikes you are welcome to ride bikes with us! Lots of Cal Cyclists are away for the summer but there is usually a group ride on Saturday mornings leaving from Sproul Plaza (at Telegraph and Bancroft) at 9:30 AM. You can also contact us on “TheFacebook” where you can “post” on our “wall” and find some people to ride with! Give us a shout, we’re generally a friendly bunch of haberdashers.

Specialized Team Order
In case you missed the action on the list serve, it’s team bike order time! The Specialized team order is happening next Thursday, Sept. 29, at 7 pm at Mike’s Bikes in Berkeley. If you want to buy a Specialized bike or equipment, show up. They will have a handful of staff there to help with all sorts of things including choices and sizing.
If you need a bike more immediately, consider buying a 2011 bike right now off the floor at Mike’s. Most of them are discounted around 15%. All brands of 2011 bikes they carry are on sale, not just Specialized bikes.
This is the first of two Specialized bike/equipment orders this year through Mike’s. (The second one will be next semester, but bikes can take a long time to arrive, up to 5 months so if you want a bike for road season, consider buying it now.) This team order will cover both bikes and equipment. If would like to see the lists of bikes and/or equipment available for purchase email me, Katie, at katie.hall@berkeley.edu. Most of the specialized bikes are available, although for some of them the component choices are limited. As for the equipment available, there are bags, bottles, gloves, helmets, saddles, shoes, and tires, all made by Specialized.
Remember, you can only partake in the team order if you have paid dues. So if you want a new bike or some new specialized equipment, get your dues in.
You don’t have to buy the bike next Thursday. The
order will be open for one week following next Thursday. If you are
ready to buy next Thursday, that’s great, but otherwise, still come so
that you know what the deal is. If you decide on buying a bike
or equipment, you can go into Mike’s during the next week and
purchase your bike/equipment.
Also, email me if you don’t think you can make it next Thursday and we’ll work something out. Or if you have questions.
Cheers,
Katie
