Corinne Crawford Memorial Ride - June 27th, 2010
In 2007, UC Berkeley graduate student Corinne Crawford was struck by a car while returning from a ride to the summit of Mt. Diablo. Join her friends, family, and teammates as we ride in memory of Corinne and in support of safe roads for cyclists everywhere.
The Corinne Crawford Memorial Ride will take place Sunday, June 27th, 2010. For more information, visit http://calcycling.org/tutacsc/.
2009 Cal Cycling Road Race and Criterium
The home race weekend is scheduled for April 4,5 this year. We are returning to hills of Crockett for the road race on Saturday. Cyclists will have to make it up McEwen Rd at least 3 times, and even 6 for the Men's A's. To make the day harder, we've added a Team Time Trial that will go along Franklin Canyon Road beforehand. The Criterium returns to the same location, the College-Durant-Bowditch-Bancroft block, with the Start/Finish line in front of the Art Museum. The racing begins Sunday at 9 am and should provide entertainment all day long. Also, the Alumni Race returns, starting at Noon. We welcome alumni from any WCCC university (or anywhere else for that matter), even if you took up cycling long after you left college. Entry fees for the Alumni Race are $10 to cover our expenses plus a suggested donation of $15 (which you can make to your school of choice - hopefully Cal!). Collegiate entry fees are $15, and all registration will take place day-of.

Cal Cycling takes on the Xterra Collegiate Championships - Maureen Kunz the Collegiate Champion!
This past weekend, 4 Cal Cyclists headed up to Lake Tahoe for the Xterra Collegiate Championships. Xterra is an off-road triathlon featuring a 750 meter swim in Lake Tahoe, a 20 mile mountain bike ride up to the Tahoe Rim Trail (2500 ft of climbing), and a 5 k trail run. With the weather turning stormy Friday night into Saturday morning, the conditions on the Lake turned treacherous causing the officials to cancel the swim. Instead they started us off with a mile run around the block, before hopping on the bikes. We were somewhat disappointed as we had put in a lot of training by swimming in the Bay to get used to the cold temperatures and waves. We shrugged it off, put away our wetsuits, and laced up the running shoes. The mountain bike took us to the top of the ridge overlooking the Lake, but there was no time to soak in the views along the Flume Trail, as we were solely focused on pushing it while not falling off the cliff side. Roughly 2 hours later, the mountain bike portion was finished off with a screaming descent down the fire road back to transition. Up next was the 5k trail run, made tougher by the tired legs and lack of oxygen at altitude. Thankfully for us cyclists the run was on the short side, because by the end of it the legs and lungs were cramping badly. Over the last creek crossing on a slippery log, and the finish line was in sight with the Cal crew at the top of the leaderboard. Maureen Kunz was the first Collegiate women across the line, claiming the National Title, and was the 5th overall women. Rob Dahl finished on the podium as the 3rd Collegiate male and 8th overall, while Russ McBride was right behind him in 4th place and 11th overall. Tom Reynolds rounded it out with a 6th place collegiate finish and 39th overall (out of 250+ athletes).
The Big Ride
The Big Ride is back in the East Bay this year, coinciding with the Cal-Stanford football game on Nov 22. Since the game is in the morning, we'll move the ride to Sunday morning. We will have some tailgating and BBQ'ing options for those coming to the game on Saturday. On Sunday come dressed in your old Cal or Stanford kits, as we'll be heading out into the East Bay hills for some great riding. Whether you're looking for a quick spin or a challenging ride to the top of Diablo, we'll have something for you.
Next Clothing order due 9/29
The next clothing order will be going out on Sept 29. This is usually the best bet to pick up specialty items that the team normally doesn't stock (full zip jerseys, long sleeve jerseys, wind vests and jackets, thermal gear, bib knickers, skin suits, etc.). The order will arrive mid November so get ready for winter. Check out the clothing page in the upcoming weeks for an order form to fill out.
Also, stay tuned for the jersey design contest. Submit your design and it could possibly be selected for the upcoming year!
